The TPH2 dual hydrogen laboratory train is Talgo's initial venture, validating sustainable short- and medium-haul mobility. It is based on the Talgo Vittal commuter and medium-haul technology platform, with traction provided by hydrogen fuel cells powered by renewable 100% hydrogen.
The system is complemented by lithium-ion traction batteries that increase the power available during start-ups, taking advantage of the train's braking to recharge, further proof of the sustainability of this type of train.
With this laboratory train concept, Talgo has managed to validate and provide the perfect solution for replacing diesel traction and decarbonizing railway lines not electrified by overhead lines.
This platform is designed to operate at a maximum speed of 220 km/h in electric mode and 160 km/h in hydrogen mode. The hydrogen fuel cell consumes only 0.25 kg/km and allows the train a range of 800 km without electrification.
