Repsol has defined an ambitious and realistic strategy to position itself as a key player in the development of renewable hydrogen in Spain and Europe.
Vision
Renewable hydrogen is one of Repsol's key transformation pillars to achieve its goal of becoming a net-zero emissions company by 2050.
Repsol leads the T-Hynet project, together with Enagás Renewable and Messer, a strategic initiative that will mark a milestone in renewable hydrogen production in Spain. Located at Repsol's industrial complex in Tarragona, this project includes the installation of a 150 MW alkaline electrolyzer.
T-Hynet has been selected by the IDAE as part of the PERTE ERHA Hydrogen Valleys program. This recognition underscores the project's relevance to energy innovation, industrial competitiveness, and the ecological transition in Europe.
The electrolyzer will have the capacity to produce up to 23,000 tons of renewable hydrogen per year and will prevent the emission of up to 200,000 tons of CO₂ each year. This production will be used for multiple industrial and energy applications, including its use at Repsol's own industrial center, at the Molecular Recycling Solution Ecoplant for the production of e-methanol, and in the Tarragona petrochemical industry. In the future, it could have other uses, such as sustainable mobility, especially in heavy and public transport, or the injection of hydrogen into the natural gas network.
The project is currently in the engineering phase, and its development is expected to significantly boost the region's industrial and technological infrastructure. In addition to its environmental impact, T-Hynet will generate direct and indirect employment, attracting investment and strengthening the renewable hydrogen value chain in Catalonia.
One of the electrolyzer's distinctive features is its advanced technology, designed to maximize energy efficiency and minimize water consumption through the use of reclaimed industrial water. This innovation reinforces the consortium's commitment to sustainability and resource optimization.
T-Hynet is integrated into two key ecosystems for the development of the hydrogen economy in Southern Europe: the Catalan Hydrogen Valley and the Ebro Hydrogen Corridor. It is also part of the European Hydrogen Backbone, a pan-European network that seeks to connect the main centers of renewable hydrogen production and consumption, facilitating its transportation and commercialization on a continental scale.
Ultimately, T-Hynet is much more than energy infrastructure: it's a model for industrial transformation, public-private collaboration, and technological innovation.
