To make Spain the first green hydrogen hub in the European Union, connecting production and consumption areas through a robust infrastructure.
The Spanish Hydrogen Trunk Network is a strategic initiative led by Enagás to develop a national renewable hydrogen transport infrastructure. The first axes of this network, included in the European Union's first list of PCI projects, and with a planned length of 2,600 kilometers, will connect the main hydrogen production and consumption areas in Spain, encompassing the Cantabrian Coast, Ebro Valley, Levante, Vía de la Plata, and the connection to Puertollano.
The project is part of Enagás' Strategic Plan and responds to European decarbonization and energy security objectives. In January 2025, the European Commission awarded Enagás 100% of the requested funding from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) funds for the study phase of these first axes of the Spanish hydrogen grid.
The development of the first axes of the Spanish Backbone Network is an essential foundation for connecting renewable hydrogen production centers with domestic demand, thus boosting the competitiveness of Spanish industry and decarbonization, as well as linking production centers on the Iberian Peninsula with the H2med corridor, which is crucial for making Spain the leading hydrogen hub in Europe.
