Vision
To be the European Union's first green hydrogen corridor, facilitating the export of renewable hydrogen and promoting international energy cooperation.
H2med It is the first major green hydrogen corridor in the European Union, driven by Enagas together with the transport system operators (TSOs) of France (Teréga and NaTran), Portugal (REN) and Germany (OGE) and the support of the European Commission.
The project includes two main infrastructures: CelZa, a land-based interconnection between Celorico da Beira (Portugal) and Zamora (Spain), with a maximum capacity of 0.75 million tons/year; and BarMar, a submarine pipeline between Barcelona (Spain) and Marseille (France), with a maximum capacity of 2 million tons of hydrogen per year, equivalent to 10% of the total consumption target set for Europe. Both infrastructures will include compression stations in Zamora and Barcelona, respectively.
H2med will connect hydrogen networks from the Iberian Peninsula to northwestern Europe, facilitating the development of a competitive pan-European hydrogen market.
H2med represents an example of European energy cooperation and a firm commitment to decarbonization and security of supply. The project is a testament to public-private collaboration, as it has the support of infrastructure operators from four countries and their respective governments. H2med was presented at the Euromed Summit, held in Alicante on December 9, 2022, by the governments of Portugal, Spain, and France with the support of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and Germany joined in January 2023 through the TSO OGE. In October 2023, the project partners held an event in Berlin where the support of the four governments and the European Commission, as well as that of the industry and the main players in the sector in Germany, was ratified.
In January 2025, the European Commission awarded 100% of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Energy funds requested by the promoters of the H2med project for the study phase.
