Strengthen Spain's position to become a producer and exporter of renewable hydrogen through the development of a robust and flexible hydrogen network, which will help achieve both national and European decarbonization goals, boosting competitiveness.
The North-1 project involves the development of underground hydrogen storage in saline cavities in the town of Polanco, Cantabria.
This project is the result of a collaboration between Enagás and Solvay. The project will leverage Solvay's expertise in developing salt cavities—originally created for sodium carbonate production operations—to be converted into hydrogen storage under the coordination of Enagás, which contributes its experience in energy transport and hydrogen infrastructure to integrate this capacity into the Spanish energy system. Hydrogen from the grid will be injected into the salt cavities during peak renewable generation periods and extracted when hydrogen demand exceeds generation.
The project is included in the European Union's first list of Projects of Common Interest (PCI). In January 2025, the European Commission awarded 100% of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Energy funds requested by Enagás and Solvay for the storage study phase.
