He H2Ports project – Implementing Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Technologies in Ports – is an initiative that seeks to introduce the use of hydrogen as an energy carrier in the port environment. Its main objective is contribute to the decarbonization of the logistics-port sector.
H2Ports It falls within the framework of the European Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking program and involves a multidisciplinary consortium led by the Valenciaport Foundation. Its partners include the Port Authority of Valencia and the National Hydrogen Centre, technology companies such as Enagás, Carburos Metálicos, Ballard Power Systems Europe, Atena, and Hyster-Yale, as well as logistics operators such as MSC Terminal Valencia and Grimaldi Group.
The project focuses on three lines of action:
1. Hydrogen-powered port machinery (a container stacker and a yard tractor) located at two different port terminals.
2. A mobile hydrogen refueling station that allows for the safe and efficient refueling of vehicles during testing, guaranteeing operational autonomy.
3. Analysis of avoided emissions, energy efficiency, operating costs and the potential for replicability in other European ports.
