Mission

Hylios' mission is to transform wastewater treatment into a source of clean energy by developing innovative photocatalytic systems. The project aims to sustainably produce green hydrogen and oxygen by utilizing treated wastewater and reducing energy and potable water consumption in industrial processes. The goal is to convert existing wastewater treatment plants, traditionally considered energy sinks, into efficient facilities that repurpose resources and contribute to the circular economy.

Vision

Hylios aims to lead a paradigm shift in the water and chemical industries, positioning photocatalysis as a key technology for green hydrogen production. The vision is for wastewater treatment plants to evolve into energy self-sufficient factories, capable of producing clean fuels and reducing their environmental footprint. With this approach, the project contributes to decarbonization, the energy transition, and the achievement of European sustainability goals.

The HYLIOS project was launched with the aim of promoting a paradigm shift in the wastewater treatment sector and other chemical industries, typically associated with high energy and potable water consumption. Through innovative new technological developments, the project seeks to transform current Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs), considered energy and waste sinks, into new, energy-efficient factories that repurpose resources. Specifically, HYLIOS will focus on promoting innovative new solutions for the sustainable and efficient generation of green hydrogen (and oxygen) through the photocatalytic splitting of treated wastewater.
