Nordex Electrolyzers: NX2500

Mission

Nordex Electrolyzers SL is a joint venture formed by Nordex Group, one of the leading manufacturers of wind turbines in Europe, and SODENA, the public company of the Government of Navarra dedicated to economic and business development. 

The company was founded with the mission of developing and manufacturing electrolyzers specifically designed to operate with renewable energy, contributing to the growth of the green hydrogen economy. 

Building on the experience accumulated by the Nordex Group over more than four decades in the wind energy sector, Nordex Electrolyzers seeks to accelerate the technological maturation of hydrogen and reduce its production cost, in order to replicate the success achieved in renewable energies in recent years. 

Vision

Nordex Electrolyzers aspires to become a global leader in the development of electrolyzers, with technology designed and manufactured in Spain. Its objective is to make a dual contribution to society: 

  • Promote the decarbonization of the economy through equipment that facilitates the production of green hydrogen. 
  • Strengthening the European industrial fabric in a strategic sector with great growth potential. 

The project to develop a MW-scale pressurized alkaline electrolyzer, specifically designed to operate with renewable energy, was initiated in 2022 with the support of the European Union, which classified it as an IPCEI – Important Project of Common European Interest – in the Hy2Tech area, within Component 9 of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience program financed with Next Generation EU funds. 

Within the framework of the project, Nordex Electrolyzers is working to obtain a reliable, easy-to-maintain, efficient electrolyzer and, above all, a highly flexible one that makes its continuous operation viable with energy from a renewable plant. 

From 2022 to the present, Nordex Electrolyzers has been executing the established work plan, meeting the intermediate milestones set:  

  • In 2023, the first 50kW prototype was launched as a proof of concept for the design principles. 
  • In 2024, the scaling up to 500kW will be done to test the final stack diameter. 
  • In 2025, the prototyping of the NX2500, the 2.5MW electrolyzer that is currently in the testing phase at the Nordex Electrolyzers test bench in Lumbier (Navarra). 

The NX2500 is already a commercial product being offered to potential customers and will be mass-produced at the Nordex factory in Barasoain. The project will conclude in 2026 with the design of the NX5000 and NX10000 modules, with capacities of 5MW and 10MW respectively.
